Cheonggyecheon Stream Walk, a Night View Hotspot in Downtown Seoul

|KOMEDI

A blue waterway cutting through a gray concrete jungle

Jongno and Jung-gu, the heart of Seoul, are densely packed with giant skyscrapers. Cutting through this concrete jungle, there's a place that resonates with the gentle sound of flowing water. This is Cheonggyecheon Stream, Seoul's representative ecological stream in the city center, spanning approximately 11km. We introduce this captivating waterside promenade, reborn to allow nature and the city to coexist, after removing the concrete that had buried it beneath roads and elevated highways in the past.

It is recommended for those who want to take a break from the busy city, those looking for a free walking course, and those who want to capture Seoul's nightscape in photos.

Ecological restoration that changed the urban paradigm

Cheonggyecheon Stream is considered one of the most successful urban environmental restoration projects of modern times. This space, with the cool sound of waterfalls and clear streams flowing instead of car noise, offers tired travelers a sense of moving into nature just a few steps from the heart of the city.

The well-maintained promenade along both sides of the stream is separated from the surrounding noise, making it ideal for reflection. Herons and fish by the water, and wildflowers blooming with the seasons, intuitively showcase the eco-friendly charm of megacity Seoul.

Two faces, different by day and night

Cheonggyecheon Stream exudes entirely different charms depending on the time of day you visit. During the day, when the sunlight reflects and sparkles on the water's surface, you can cross stepping stones or sit on benches to experience the vibrant daily life of Seoul. At night, however, when darkness falls, subtle LED lighting romantically illuminates the stream's fountains and bridges, transforming it into the most beautiful night promenade in the city center.

The two-tiered waterfall at the starting point of the stream, Cheonggye Plaza, the 22 bridges with traditional architectural beauty, and public art pieces throughout the promenade further enrich the joy of walking. Various cultural events such as lantern festivals and night markets are also held in spring and autumn.
